Whether it’s a summer beach barbecue, a winter holiday party, an after work happy hour or a quiet dinner for two, alcohol and your diet will always be an issue.

There are lots of tales of people working hard to eat healthily and lose weight all week long, then letting alcohol cancel out their efforts on the weekend.

All that sugar  . .  and those the syrups!
Do they necessarilly add on weight?
Or can alcohol form a part of your diet?

Whether it’s a summer beach barbecue, a winter holiday party, an after work happy hour or a quiet dinner for two, alcohol and your diet will always be an issue.

There are lots of tales of people working hard to eat healthily and lose weight all week long, then letting alcohol cancel out their efforts on the weekend. Consider carefully not only WHEN you drink, but what kind of drink, how much, and what you drink it with. ALl can have a huge effect on the way your bady deals with the alcohol, and can make a big difference to any diet.
7 Tips for
a tiny bit tipsy
but healthy lifestyle

1. Protein before your Prosecco. If you know you’re going to be drinking, have some protein first.
The less food you have in your stomach, the more impact a drink will have, and the more likely you’ll be to ask for another or forget good choices.
Having a healthy fat or protein in your stomach will keep you smart and help you focus on veggies or nut snacks instead of going for the fried appetizers.

2. Serving size savvy. Make sure you understand alcohol servings, unit counts of alcohol and what it means to your body.Free-pour Drinks?  Lots of restaurants (and even more friends!) pour generous drinks that make 2 glasses worth of alcohol look like its only one. The more you know about what you’re taking in, the more control you will have.

3. Whiskey waistline wisdom. Choose wisely.
If you’re having a beer, choose one that is low carb. When asking for a mixed drink go for club soda instead of juice or other high sugar choices.

4. Fake out your friends.
Order a pretty substitute to make it look like you’re drinking water with lime.  Something as simple as water and a twist of lime or lemon in a tall glass will keep you on your diet without calling attention to the fact that you’re not really indulging.(It will also count towards your daily water intake!)

5. Merlot munchy mindfulness.
Remember to eat and drink mindfully. One of the biggest traps that alcohol creates is the tendency to reach out and grab whatever food is in front of you. Skip the chips and dips and opt for the carrots and celery. Better yet, walk away from the food entirely.

6. Think before you drink. Think ahead about what you’re going to eat after drinking.
If you have a plan in mind, you will be much less likely to let yourself order a high fat, high salt meal.

7. Popularize your sobriety. Offer to be the designated driver. Three women drinking and one woman 'designated driver'.
If you take responsibility for all your friends’ safety, you give yourself a great reason not to drink. Everybody else will really appreciate it, in fact they will LOVE you for it and you can feel good about yourself. It’s a real win-win!

Alcohol in your diet?

Alcohol is made from sugar or starch and it can contains lots of calories – seven calories a gram in fact, which is almost as many as pure fat!
Calories that come from alcohol are 'empty calories', i.e. they have no nutritional value. Most alcoholic drinks also contain traces of vitamins and minerals, but not usually in amounts that are likely to make any significant contribution to your diet.

Drinking alcohol also reduces the amount of fat your body burns for energy. While we can store nutrients, protein, carbohydrates, and fat in our bodies, we can't store alcohol. So our system will always try and get rid of it, and makes getting alcohol out of your system the body's top priority.  While your body is trying to get rid of alcohol, many of the other functions that should be happening  such as burning fat, will be suspended.

How many calories in Alcohol?

Beer and cocktails can be very high in calories.  Cutting back on the amount or frequency of drinking can reduce substantially the amount of calories you consume.

Low Calorie Alcoholic drinks
Many alcoholic products now offer a 'LIGHT' version.
Some LIGHT WINES can have less than 80 calaries in a small glass, compared to 159 caloiues ina regular (13%ABV) white wine.

Spirits like GIN
could be contributing
to WEIGHT GAIN

A pint of beer contains the same
amount of calories as a slice of pizza.
Cutting back on alcohol can improve your health, mental and physical well-being. There are plenty of practical ways you can start to cut down and stay on track.

Many Diets that work well include a small amount of alcohol, as this helps a lot of people's bodies believe that they are not on a diet at all and everything is normal.  One of the secrets of any diet is to not SHOCK your body, but to convince your system that everything is quite normal.
